This lovely ensuite bathroom was once dark and dated bathroom with no storage. It's in a beautiful grand old Victorian house in Ashfield and now matches the aesthetics of the rest of the house.
This project was a Finalist in KBDI Designer Awards, Small Bathrooms category.
Design brief
Lift the dark and dated mood
The original master ensuite came with a range of sad features: a steep raked ceiling, dated shiny brown mosaics, and lack of natural light. It had a cramped layout and insufficient storage and it didn't harmonise with the rest of the home. To transform this space, our goal was clear: create a light-filled and modern bathroom that meets the homeowners' needs and respects the architectural era.
Include a double shower
One of the homeowners' main requests was a double shower, a daunting task in such a compact space, especially without a shower screen. As a compromise we managed to fit in a beautiful double shower with a half glass screen. We had to sacrifice a bath tub to be able to do it.
Add storage
We designed a well-proportioned navy floating vanity with rounded corners and traditional panelling, as a nod to the heritage features of the house. The vanity looks elegant and provides much-needed storage. It is fitted with a motion sensor -controlled light, integrated under the vanity, for more comfortable night-time access. A pill-shaped mirror cabinet compliments the rounded vanity shape.
Choose elegant finishes
The bold and patterned dark indigo floor tiles are the central focal point of the bathroom. Both the clients and I fell in love with them. We picked the blue from these tiles for the vanity, mirror cabinet and walk-in-robe shelving. It looks cohesive, but interesting.
For the walls we selected matte wall tiles and smoothly textured herringbone subway tiles, to keep the space bright and light.
The timeless marble wall sconce fitted the scheme beautifully.
The finishing touches
We selected bronze tapware and fittings to complete the luxurous aesthetics. Unfortunately, due to budget considerations, the matching toilet flush button had to be dropped from the final selection.
We also refitted the adjoining walk-in-robe with matching blue shelves and rounded corners as part of this renovation.
This bathroom is now functional and beautiful, and a perfect fit for the grand old home.
