Let’s talk about flowers. In Australia, we are Let’s talk about flowers.

In Australia, we are lucky to have such a great range of floral varieties available to us. Much of our natural foliage is graphic and striking, allowing for a simple and modern approach when styling them.

Often, sticking to one variety in a vase is enough to make a bold statement. There are also many excellent silk and faux varieties on the market; you can’t tell the difference!

Choosing the shape of your vase is just as important as the tools you use; investing in a good pair of snips is definitely worth it.

When creating compositions, try to stray from the expected by incorporating different heights in the way you cut your stems. Remember, flowers all on one level can look plonked in a vase!

Our favourite vase of the moment is:

🎨 Colour doesn't always need to come from the wall 🎨 Colour doesn't always need to come from the walls.

A cheerful patterned rug, a couple of colourful cushions, or even changing the knobs on a dresser can be enough to give a room a different feel. The best part is that if your tastes change, you can swap them out without starting all over again.

Kids' rooms are a great place to be a little bolder with colour. It's a simple way to add personality and create a space that's fun to spend time in.

Sometimes it's the smaller choices that you’ll end up enjoying the most.

Wallpaper is not for the unsure! Unlike paint, onc Wallpaper is not for the unsure! Unlike paint, once you've put wallpaper up, it is a commitment. With paint, you can immediately repaint it, but with paper, unless you get peel & stick (which can still be hard to get off), it’s trickier to remove.

Finding a pattern that really resonates with you is the challenge, and as we see new designs all the time, you can lean on us for advice.

Nothing makes a bigger impact than a great pattern. It will often be the first thing people notice when they walk into a room; however, you can use it in these ways to minimise the overload:

Use it below the chair rail height and leave the top of the room a solid colour; we did this recently in a kid’s bedroom seen here.

Use it just as a feature wall. Some like to cover all walls, but a feature wall will allow you to create contrast with clean walls in the space.

Use more of a textural wallpaper, like grasscloth, that gives you the texture without the big pattern. (Do remember, though, that you will always see the joints with grasscloth!)

Be playful, use it in a nook or behind built-in shelves

We do love using wallpaper, and at the end of the day, life's short, so have some fun with your walls!

Thank you to @mecquestore and @marc_et_ for beautiful accessories! ❤️

I’m particularly proud of the cabinet behind the splashback. It required a lot of thought, but it keeps the kitchen tidy and neat, plus there’s nearly 900mm deep drawers under!

Also, I love the bathroom tiles from @livingtiles - we used them horizontally and vertically. Which one is your favourite?

PS. The house is for sale - in case you’re on the market for a house with a fantastic kitchen and bathrooms.

Rugs with patterns - do you love them or hate them Rugs with patterns - do you love them or hate them?

A patterned rug instantly anchors a room and creates a defined space. It also adds colour and visual impact to the eye. To keep the space balanced, pull accent colours from the rug's pattern to use in your cushions, artwork, and decor, even flowers!

For a fun take on it, combine patterns of different scales, such as pairing a large floral print with a smaller stripe or geometric design. Pattern on pattern is not as scary as it sounds!

We have used many bold designs and patterns in rugs for our clients, and they have loved the effect.

What do you think?

The pouf can be the final touch, giving a space th The pouf can be the final touch, giving a space the needed punctuation to finish off the room. These versatile decorating additions add personality and can be used in various ways in your home.

You could use a pouf as a coffee table with a decorative tray on top. Contrast hard lines of a squarish sofa with a round surprise. Pair different materials, like jute or leather, for a warmer, more personality-driven version. In the bedroom, a pouf at the foot of your bed serves as a place to throw your clothes (We all do it!)

Be considerate of the height when choosing a pouf, as they do vary. Look for a height that matches the height of your sofa if you want to use it as a footstool; choose a firmer-filled one for pairing with a dining table if using for seating.

The colour you choose can be the personal touch; contrasting colours often work better so as not to be too matchy-matchy.

Pink has always had a place in our projects and in our hearts. Pink is playful, but when used wisely, it can be an amazing accent colour. Depending on the shade, it can be used as a soft backdrop, a grounding earthy tone, or bold enough to steal the show:

🌸 Blush and pale pink – Modern neutral that reflects light beautifully.

🌸 Dusty rose and mauve – Vintage, calming, and chic vibe.

🌸 Terracotta and salmon – Earthy, cozy Mediterranean warmth.

🌸 Fuchsia and magenta – Bold, energetic statement pieces.

Lisa Nolan, Assistant and Colour Expert at INSIDES Lisa Nolan, Assistant and Colour Expert at INSIDESIGN, shares her upbringing in the North Island of NZ: “Growing up surrounded by nature and sports shaped my love for natural fibers and textures.”

She favours wool as her carpet of choice and relies on merino wool for cozy winter layers. Her time working on the David Jones buying floor in the 2000s deepened her appreciation for local fashion designers like Trelise Cooper and Karen Walker. “Karen Walker's reduced colour palette for Resene enhances a space without overtaking it,” she says. Dulux’s take on New Zealand colours with its own range, also inspired by New Zealand, is a little more poppy and saturated but reflects the palette differently.

Lisa points out that NZ paint colors are unique, influenced by higher UV light and our stunning landscapes. “They reflect our heritage and nature while evoking a sense of calm,” she adds. 🌿✨ Lisa knows a lot about colour, having received a Diploma of Creative Visual Arts, specialising in Colour Design in 2009 at ISCD (International School of Colour & Design)

🌍✨ Meet Marcus Hay, our interior decorator and sty 🌍✨ Meet Marcus Hay, our interior decorator and stylist! Born in Germany and having lived in Australia and the USA, Marcus brings a unique perspective shaped by diverse cultures. “Decorating can be a pastiche of influences and experiences, with elements from different eras often woven into our design approach.”

In Germany, he appreciates heritage, history, and the movements that produced iconic design through the Bauhaus style. His family has always owned Volkswagens, starting with a Combi when he was an infant. Growing up in Australia offered a unique childhood and a strong connection to the outdoors. While working in editorial, Marcus built relationships with Creative icons, Dinosaur Designs and Ken Done, and developed an appreciation for Mid-Century Modern (MCM) Australian furniture. In New York, the design capital of the world, his exposure to art and design is an experience he will always cherish.

Now back in Sydney, Marcus is focused on integrating these global experiences into contemporary Australian design, creating functional and stylish spaces that reflect a rich blend of cultural influences.
