As interior designers, we're not just creating spaces; we're shaping the way people live, work, and interact. It's a responsibility we take seriously, one that necessitates striking a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality. While captivating visuals are essential, a space ultimately needs to serve a purpose and cater to the user's needs.

So, how do we orchestrate this harmonious marriage of form and function? Here are key principles that guide our design approach:
- Start with understanding the user: Every project begins with a deep dive into the user's lifestyle, needs, and aspirations. This understanding becomes the foundation for crafting a space that truly works for them. We do it during the Initial Consultation for smaller projects and in a separate Briefing meeting to larger ones.
- Prioritise user flow: We consider how people will move through the space, ensuring a smooth and intuitive flow. This might involve creating designated zones for different activities, minimising traffic patterns in high-density areas, and ensuring easy access to essentials. 3D design tool is irreplaceable in this.
- Embrace multi-functionality: We believe in designing spaces that can adapt to changing needs. This could involve incorporating furniture with dual purposes, creating flexible storage solutions, or – my favourite - utilising space-saving design elements.
- Let form follow function: While aesthetics are important, they should never compromise functionality. This means selecting furniture that's not just visually appealing but also comfortable and provides proper support. Similarly, choosing lighting should be based on both style and its ability to illuminate the space effectively.
- Embrace the power of details: Even seemingly small details can play a significant role in enhancing the user experience. Strategic placement of power outlets, incorporating ergonomic features, and providing intuitive storage solutions can make a world of difference.

By prioritising this relationship between aesthetics and functionality, we create spaces that go beyond mere decoration. They become havens of comfort, efficiency, and beauty – spaces that truly support the lives lived within them. This is the essence of designing with purpose, and it's what drives our commitment to creating solutions, not just showcasing styles.
This is why we never start with colours and materials.
