How to avoid 6 important bathroom design problems? How to avoid 6 important bathroom design problems? 💦

We've just started a bathroom renovation project for my client and this is a timely checklist of the main issues to avoid in the bathroom renovation and design.

1. Long tile leadtime causing rework and disappointments - plan and order early.
2. Tile layout not agreed in advance resulting in disappointments - we always make the tiling plan in writing and confirm it on site with the tiler to make grout lines align.
3. Tapware functionality issues due to incorrect / inadequately considered placement - always double check the functionality before ordering.
4. Cost overruns due to inadequate planning in advance - double work in bathrooms can be horribly expensive.
5. Space planning neglected causing useability issues - make sure doors and drawers have room to open.
6. Lighting not planned in advance - bathroom lighting needs to be multi-level.

Do you have your own horror story of bathroom renovation?

    💛 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 💛

One of the biggest challenges people face is imagining how a design will look before it's built. Insidesign use powerful 3D design software that helps bring ideas to life early in the process — so you can see your space, colours, and finishes come together 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 a single tile is laid.

As one of our clients said:
“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬.”

From layout tweaks to bold colour choices, our clients feel confident knowing they’ve seen the vision — and love it — before we move forward.

It’s been a while since I properly introduced my It’s been a while since I properly introduced myself — so here’s a little peek at the person behind INSIDESIGN.

I’m Sari, the founder and creative director, and here are 10 things you might not know about me...

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 🇫🇮
I grew up in Finland (yes, with actual bear encounter lessons at school and yes, my dad still hunts them... in his 80s.)

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 🌈
Even though I’m a Finn and Nordic design is all about wood, monochrome and minimalism, I actually love using colour in my interiors. (And wood too.)

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 🏛️
I wanted to be an architect but took the “easy” route to Uni with Maths, Computer Science & Astronomy. It took me decades to circle back to interior design.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 🏡
My interiors passion is built on my belief that everyone deserves a space that feels calm, personal and restorative. I truly believe our surroundings shape our mood, energy and wellbeing. I can’t save lives — but I can help someone who does, to recharge in a home that supports them.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀 ✈️
Before interiors, I worked in Telco for 20 years and travelled up to 200 days a year. I moved to Australia for two years… 20 years ago — and still here!

𝗠𝘂𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 💛
We have two beautiful teenage daughters and two rabbits. That’s both the house and garden destroyed.

𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 🗣️
I speak (or studied) 8 languages: Finnish, Swedish, English, French, German, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish. Most are rusty these days.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 💃
My number one hobby is dancing — I picked it back up a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back. I do Latin and ballroom, with favourites like salsa, bachata, swing, and tango. I even take part in dance school performances and competitions — a fun (and slightly terrifying!) way to push myself out of my comfort zone and keep the creative energy flowing.
    ✨Terrazzo is having a moment — and we’re 100 ✨Terrazzo is having a moment — and we’re 100% here for it.

Why we love 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘇𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀:
✔️ Incredibly durable and water-resistant
✔️ Conceals water spots and grime (so forgiving!)
✔️ Available in endless colour combinations and chip styles
✔️ Brings visual texture without overwhelming a small space

Sometimes, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘇𝗼 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 — tile thickness, cost, or structural limitations can get in the way. That’s where 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘇𝘇𝗼-𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 tiles come in. They offer the same beautiful, speckled aesthetic — with greater flexibility, thinner profiles, and shorter lead

From vanities to splashbacks, terrazzo (or terrazzo-look!) adds a playful sophistication to modern homes — and works beautifully with warm timbers and brushed finishes.

Can you tell in the above pictures what’s real terrazzo vs. terrazzo-look?

Your entryway sets the tone for your entire home — it's your home's first impression, and it should speak your style fluently.

Here are 3 ways to elevate your entryway like a designer:

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 🪞
Creates a sense of space and bounces light beautifully.

𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 💡
Add a wall sconce or table lamp for instant warmth and welcome.

𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 🌸
Think trays, books, a small vase of seasonal flowers or a sculptural object – styling that looks effortless (but is secretly well planned).

✨Pro Tip: Add a beautiful runner or rug to ground the space and invite you in.

—

🖤 At INSIDESIGN, we style every entry to feel like an embrace.
Could your entryway could use a little love?

Here it is again, our award winning 🏆 bathroom! Here it is again, our award winning 🏆 bathroom!

I’m super happy and proud of winning the Small Bathrooms (NSW) category at KBDI Designer Awards 2025 this weekend!

It especially warms my heart that the judges liked this bathroom, as it’s my favourite ever also. 😍 The project was lovely to work in, clients were fantastic, build team professional (check out @rjmcalistertiling tiling here!) and we had such good support from our suppliers (@justbathroomware @livingtiles @divinekitchens ).

We’re starting the next phase in the same house very soon, can’t wait!
